Our Story

Mike & Chels

“Just a small town girl…”

“Just a (destined to be) city boy…”

Mike and Chelsea met the same way any self-respecting, ultra-busy professional couple in NY does these days – online. It all started when Chelsea ‘winked’ at Mike and he wrote back. Their first date was Luke’s Lobster where Mike had his first ever lobster roll (yum!). They talked for hours about everything from college basketball to ketchup (true story!) and ended up leaving the restaurant when it closed, finishing a perfect first date with an impromptu round-trip excursion on the Roosevelt Island tram.

They agreed to meet again in a week, but there was no way Mike could wait that long to see her. So he convinced her to go out on a ‘school night’ by getting tickets to the Jimmy V Classic (a college basketball tournament) at Madison Square Garden. They both knew it was the start of something wonderful.

Since then, they’ve grown together in many ways, sharing their passion for great wine and food, travel, college basketball and dancing whenever possible. In the fall of 2013 during their annual trip to Napa’s wine country, Mike surprised Chelsea with a ring and a promise to love her forever. Needless to say, she said ‘Yes’.

Schedule

  • Welcome Reception

Welcome to Portland! Since we’re checking out the vineyards the next day we thought it might be fun to showcase the other side of Oregon alcohol – namely their fantastic craft beers. Henry’s has >100, good food, and it’s walking distance from the two Portland hotels. Toasts begin @ 9 pm so please join us.

Travel

Fly

Portland International Airport (PDX) is the closest airport to everything and an easy cab ride to the two Portland based hotels. It is serviced by all of the major airlines (Delta, United, American, JetBlue, Southwest) and some of the less major ones (Alaska, Hawaiian, Spirit, Seaport, Frontier). Alaska Airlines often has a promotion where ‘wine flies free’.

It’s known the as ‘New York’ in Portland. We’d recommend the steak tasting at the Urban Farmer or grabbing a drink up on the rooftop at Departure.

Allison Inn & Spa
Allison Inn & Spa

The Allison is one of the nicest gigs in the valley (with a pricetag to match!). We visited as a potential venue and the rooms are just stunning. Jory – the in-house restaurant – has a chef who made stops at both French Laundry and El Bulli and a wine list which does a great job showing off the region.

Oregon

Although our first trip to Oregon was when we went to look at venues, we’ve come to really love the place. In less than an hour and a half from Portland you can be skiing (year round), on the beach, or in the vineyards. There’s fantastic hiking, more waterfalls than you can imagine, and a great laidback culture. The below are just a few suggestions.

EAT

Le Pigeon

738 E Burnside St
Portland, Oregon 97214

Hands down meant to be one of the best restaurants in Portland. Some (including their website) might call it fine dining in a relaxed atmosphere.

One of their specialties is a foie gras profiterole for dessert.

EAT

Food Trucks

Various locations – SW 10th Ave & Adler has some of the best
Portland

Portland is a city of food trucks varying from ethnic foods to grilled cheese to waffles. There are a number of lots devoted solely to this food following. The most popular of which (Nong’s Khao Man Gai) sells out daily.

EAT

DesChutes

210 NW 11th Ave
Portland, OR 97209

Eat is a bit of a misnomer as the real reason to go here is the beer. There’s plenty of different types and the menu changes with the seasons. Recommend getting some tasting paddles and ordering a few items (food is also good).

EAT

Urban Farmer

525 SW Morrison St
Portland, OR 97204

Located in the Nines hotel, the best part of the meal here was a steak tasting (grass fed, corn, grain, and wagyu). Yum! For the wine lovers, pick up a bottle @ Vinopolis and bring it over – corkage is pretty reasonable.

EAT

Salt and Straw

Various locations – including 2035 NE Alberta St
Portland, OR 97211

Awesome off the wall ice cream flavors – my favorite was a blue cheese and pear although they were all wonderful. Free tastes before you purchase so you can go through quite a bit of the line-up.

EAT

Voodoo Donuts

Various locations – original @ 22 SW 3rd Avenue
Portland, OR 97204

A Portland institution. To be fair, you’ve had a better doughnut, but you probably haven’t had one with cereal or in the shape of a voodoo doll.
